"Quinine" born and bred in Switzerland where she obtained
83 points at her mare grading as a three year old and was
selected for mare performance testing which she underwent
at "Le Haras National Bern" in Switzerland and was entered into
the Head Stud Book of the Swiss Equestrian Federation.
As a five year old she was re-presented under saddle by Rudi
Wallerbosh for the ridden mare performance test once again
at "Le Haras National" and subsequently branded as a mark of
quality.
Quinine is very much the "Queen" of our herd and
our foundation broodmare, measuring only 16hh. She was graded
into the head stud book with the Sports Horse Breeding (GB)
when we moved from Switzerland to Scotland and later presented
at the SSH Gradings.
Her competition record is flawless. In 1999 she commenced
her career on the BSJA circuit competing with great success,
jumping consistantly with 40 double clears and placings in
the space of only a few months and often winner in classes
of over 80 to 100 horses.
In her first season in 1999 she qualified for the British
Novice and Discovery finals winning the second round with
the only triple clear at Lough Farm in the British Novice,
placing 3rd in the British Novice Preliminary Round At the
Festival Of Show Jumping Scope. By the end of her first season
she was jumping Foxhunter classes and opens. Her ability to
turn sharp and jump from a stand still often proved her unbeatable
and very much a mare to be reckoned with when she was on form.
In the same year Quinine won the seven year old and over
Scottish Sports Horse Championship at the SSH summer show
a combination of show jumping and dressage results. At the
same show she was winner of the intermediate and Open Show
jumping and was presented for her IBOP mare performance test
achieving the second highest score of 81 points to date in
the UK under the careful eye of KWPN representative Jaques
Verkerk with an impressive 9 for scope.
Quinine was also a success in the dressage arena and never
out of the ribbons, achieving top marks for her regularity
of rhythm and pace. In 2002 Quinine gave birth to a beautiful
filly foal "Chiquita", who is now
herself a mother, producing our third generation. In 2006
a Grand daughter was born "Achanenna"
now also a broodmare has now produced our fourth generation.
Quinine returned to the competition circuit briefly in 2004
and successfully competed up to 1.30m classes winning four
fox hunter classes before being retired from competition and
commence her career as a broodmare at the age of 14.
Quinine has also achieved great results in the show ring.
In 2006 she was champion Broodmare at Fife Show and reserve
Champion in 2008. At Perth Show she was champion hunter broodmare
and overall reserve champion Hunter at the grand age of eighteen.
Under saddle she was winner of the working hunter at Dabbs
show in 2001 and has even been used as a model for Glenvarigill
Garages. She was placed fourth at the Royal Highland Show
with daughter "Aquenna" at foot in a very large
class and in 2007 produced the coloured colt "Cinquenno"
by Umenno.
In
2008 Quinine's colt foal Darquinno by Umenno was awarded a
first premium who was Champion foal at Fife Show, his full
sister Aquenna was awarded STER with very high scores for
jumping. Darquinno was presented at the Scottish Sports Horse
Mare & Youngstock Gradings in 2011 at the age of three
and maintained his 1st premium status. he showed excellent
jumping ability when shown loose.
After the weaning of Darquinno, Quinine left for a short
spell to Nothern Ireland as a School mistress and joined daugher
"Bequinna". She happily recomenced her show jumping
with young rider Catherine Hutchinson and returned home to
us in the summer of 2010 competition fit and scanned in foal
to Buenno at the age of 18.
In the autumn of 2009 Quinine was presented at the SSH Gradings
and was awarded STER with 80% for conformation and 80% for
jumping, thus she was awarded with the "Keur" predicate
based on her successful IBOP result and show jumping records. Her
daughter, Solaris Chiquita by the Contender son Capucinno was
also awarded the Ster predicate with excellent marks for jumping
ability, scope and technique.
In 2010 Quinine produced a colt foal by Solaris Buenno, great
canter with lots of presence, a colt very close to people,
perhaps the last of her progeny but by no means the end of
her line. she also produced a daughter in Switzerland at the
age of four.
Quinine's character is exceptional, she is very much one
of those once in a lifetime mares. We can only hope that
yet another of her progeny will be awarded Ster when they
gain three years of age in the future in order that she may
gain the Preferent title.
Her parentage;

Furioso
An influential sire of jumping horses, and is found in the
pedigrees of many top show jumpers today. Furioso was a terrible
racehorse, with zero wins out of 21 starts. However, he was
a fantastic sire of jumping horses, standing in France. Furioso
was ‘well balanced but with slightly knock kneed forelegs
and tight hocks’ and «had good bone,
and walked liked a Lord, with a magnificent pace, very energetic
and showing a great deal of amplitude, his tail swinging at
each step». His trot and gallop were good but not exceptional.
Though full of life he was docile and had a good temperament.’
After World War II, he was purchased by the French National
Stud, where he was used as a breeding stallion until his death
in 1968. Furioso was in the lines of 17 of the top 100 show
jumping sires of the 1990's.
Precipitation:
Precipitation did not race until he was three owing to a
heel problem. Precipitation did well on the track, winning
seven races including the 1937 Ascot Gold Cup (20f), King
Edward VII Stakes (12f), Gratwicke Stakes and Queen's Prize
(16f) for a total of £18,419. He was successful at
stud, producing seven classic winning racehorses and sport
horses. During his stud career, which began in 1938, he was
one of the leading sires in England, and produced over 50
stakes winners.
